COC is a Good Neighbor
Guaranteeing our residents a voice and respect in the community is at the core of COC’s philosophy and mission. We aren’t simply a provider of attractive, affordable homes - we’re integral to the fabric of the community. We strive to ensure a robust local economy, convenient and accessible transportation, clean, safe recreation spaces, and access to health and wellness resources. We collaborate with the City of Stamford and its agencies, local merchants and our neighbors to forge strong, positive relationships that benefit our residents and the entire community.
Through COC’s sponsorship of the West Side Neighborhood Revitalization Zone (WSNRZ) - a coalition of local residents, homeowners, landlords, merchants and organizations - we share news, seek input and discuss pressing issues and opportunities affecting that neighborhood. The WSNRZ is open to everyone with an interest in the West Side and is a forum for expressing concerns and impacting decisions affecting our community.
COC’s signature initiative is the Vita Health and Wellness District – a multilateral coalition promoting community health and wellbeing. Vita brings together Stamford Hospital, Optimus Healthcare, New Covenant Center, Family Centers, Children’s Learning Centers and a host of local partners to impact the ‘social determinants of health’. A walk-in primary care center has been located at our Fairgate community along with an independent, socially oriented pharmacy. Please visit www.VitaStamford.com for the big picture on how COC is supporting resident-driven, multi-partner initiatives to improve health and wellness in our neighborhoods.
Fairgate Farm, a volunteer-powered, urban agricultural program, has become the acknowledged ‘heart’ of the West Side neighborhood. Here we grow thousands of pounds of fruit and vegetables annually, hold cooking classes and food-themed festivals, host nutritional education events, and encourage everyone in the community to come “get their hands dirty”. Throughout the planting, growing and harvest months, we welcome school groups, visitors and volunteers from organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, local corporations and anyone interested in helping out, learning and having fun. Volunteers enjoy our organic produce at home. What’s left is shared via regular deliveries to local hunger relief organizations including New Covenant Center, food banks and shelters for the homeless. Through its unique partnership with Stamford’s premier human services provider, Family Centers, Charter Oak Communities is pleased to offer resident services throughout all of its communities. Beginning about 12 years ago as part of the Fairfield Court revitalization and eventually extending to the entire COC portfolio, Family Centers has offered community-building along with personalized support intended to foster resident leadership and community cohesion while promoting independence and quality of life.
